Residence Networking FAQs | Report Network or Telephone Problem
All residence rooms at Mount Allison are connected to the high-speed campus computer network, so students in residence with their own computer have a direct always-on connection to the Campus Network, the Internet, and CA*Net 4 (Canada's high-speed research network).
Most computers are configured to automatically connect to Resnet. If you plug into a residence network jack and do not get a connection, contact the Computing Services Helpdesk at 364-2474.
Before you connect, or as soon as you do ...
Computing Services is taking steps to minimize the impact of viruses on campus. As we do not have the ability to ensure student PCs are patched, clean and have up-to-date anti-virus software we ask that all students take the following precautions before connecting a PC to the Mount Allison network.
- Download and install the appropriate Microsoft Windows patch.
Go to the Microsoft Windows Update page to find out if your PC is vulnerable and acquire the appropriate patch.- Ensure you have Anti-Virus software installed and that it is up to date.
Read our Virus Information page.
- Scan your PC for infected files.
All residence students have telephone and Cable TV service from Eastlink.Long Distance Information:
Phone lines should be live when students arrive on campus.
Your phone number should be on your room inventory sheet.
You must dial "8" + 7 digits to make an off campus, local call. On campus calls require 4 digits only. All residences are in the 939 exchange, which is in the same local calling area as the 536 and 364 exchanges.
The local service is included in the Residence Communications fee. There are no recurring charges for local phone service.
Eastlink and Computing Services will provide the service only. You will have to provide and be responsible for your own phone. Telephones can be purchased at any communications retailer.
Note: Some features require a phone with "Call Display".
Long distance is not available as part of the Eastlink phone package, with the following exceptions: calling cards, call me cards, collect calls, and 1-800 numbers.

Note: All features mentioned in the above document are included as part of the package, with no additional charges. Features cannot be turned off or dropped from the service.
A number of Long Distance providers are technically able to offer service for use on Residence lines at Mount Allison, however, some may not accept student accounts. Each residence user must contact the provider of their choice to make arrangements. The University accepts no responsibility whatsoever in the payment of LD charges for students.
*Note: Calling Cards, call me cards, collect calls, and 1-800 numbers are available on your Eastlink line.
Available LD carriers are:
| ACN Aliant (1-877-225-4268) Allstream (formerly AT&T Canada) (1-888-288-2273) CIBC Excel LDA |
London Telecom MDC Primus (1-800-670-2266) Sears Sprint (Phonorola) (1-888-395-1077) Startech VTC Wintel |
It is up to the student to establish the LD account, including any credit checking, pre-authorized payment process, or other requirements that the carrier may require in order to qualify for their service. It often takes 5-8 business days for these carriers to have your LD service working.
Similarly, it is up to the student to apply for and establish any Calling Card account that they may require. Calling Cards are portable and may be used on almost any line. They may be billed to the individual, as opposed to any particular line. They too are the student's responsibility and may not be billed to the student's residence line at Mount Allison.
All residence students have Cable TV service from Eastlink as part of the Residence Communication Package.
The service includes 39 channels covering a variety of entertainment choices. All you need is your televison and cable cord.
